Rota Spain
This is a very old city next to the U.S. Navy base. The city doubles in population during tourist season, but is very quiet at other times of the year.
This is an interesting little town all by itself, but when you add to it the proximity to Gibraltar, Seville, and Cadiz you have the whole experience. Gibraltar is only a couple of hours south of Rota and it is fun walking across a live runway, avoiding the wild monkeys, and enjoying a plate of fish and chips. It is a bit of the British empire after all. And then there is Seville. An old world feel with a bit of modern architecture. Many scenes from Game of Thrones were filmed there inside the well preserved Islamic palace. Cadiz claims to be one of the many places Christopher Columbus departed when he left to find a new path to India.
